Vaasa Welfare Technology Ecosystem

Experience Lab is part of Vaasa Welfare Technology Ecosystem – an ecosystem bringing together all regional actors in this field.

The vision is to:

  • Increase people’s welfare through a flexible and transparent network on regional, national and international level.
  • Bring together academia, public sector, industry and NGOs in co-creating human centered, smart, efficient welfare technology solutions in the region of Ostrobothnia.

The aim is to:

  • foster a collaborative innovation-friendly environment and take on joint research, development and innovation projects to create a strong welfare technology cluster in our region.
  • deliver high quality, cost-efficient, human-centered welfare technology solutions

    SHIFT

    SHIFT – School Harnessing Inclusive Facilitator Technology

    SHIFT är ett innovativt och inkluderande project med både professionella och sociala prioriteringar. Projektets övergripande mål är att stärka lärares och stödpersonals digitala kompetenser för att främja inklusion av elever, inklusive elever med utländsk bakgrund och elever med specialbehov, i klassrummet.

    Projektets aktiviteter innefattar planering, utveckling och pilotisering av: 1) en evalueringsmanual som ska möjliggöra utvärderingen av hur och i vilken mån lärares och stödpersonals digitala kompetensutbildning överförs till inklusion av elever i klassrummet; 2) en lärstig som ska ge riktlinjer till lärare och pedagogisk stödpersonal angående tillägnandet av digitala kompetenser för främjande av inklusion i klassrummet.
    Målsättningen med projektet är att:

    • Utvärdera hur lärares och stödpersonals digital kompetensutveckling gynnar inklusion i klassrummet
    • Utvärdera mångdisciplinära kompetenser och samarbete mellan alla parter i det inkluderande klassrummet
    • Förbättra utbildningen och fortbildning i digitala kompetenser för lärare och stödpersonal med syftet att främja inklusion.

    Vasa InnoCare


    Digital Innovations in Welfare Technology

    The goal of the project is to create a regional innovation environment in digital technology for the healthcare sector in Ostrobothnia. In a collaborative process with stakeholders, the project aims to gradually develop, test, and evaluate innovative applications in health robotics and Virtual Reality (VR).

    The project consists of two development environments (Åbo Akademi/Experience Lab and Novia/Campus Alere) as well as pilot points in the field. The collaborative model builds networks between researchers, teachers, practitioners, and patients.

    The project will introduce new innovative applications to the field, recommendations for best practices in digital technology, and an enhanced collaborative model. The project is funded by Ostrobothnia Regional Council/ERUF and is ongoing until the end of July 2021.

    The project leader is Linda Nyholm, Unit of Nursing Science at Åbo Akademi University in Vaasa.

    [SV] Digitala innovationer kring välfärdsteknologi

    Projektets  mål  är  att  skapa  en  regional  innovationsmiljö  inom  digital  teknologi  för vård och omsorgssektorn i Österbotten. Projektet ska i en samskapande process med intressenter stegvis utveckla, testa och utvärdera innovativa tillämpningar inom hälsorobotik och Virtual Reality (VR).

    Projektet  består  av två  utvecklingsmiljöer  (Åbo  Akademi/Experience  Lab  och Novia/Campus Alere) samt piloteringspunkter på fältet. Den samskapande modellen bygger  nätverk  mellan  forskare, lärare,  yrkesutövare  och  patienter. 

    Projektet kommer  tillföra  nya  innovativa  tillämpningar  till  fältet,  rekommendationer  för  god praxis för digital teknologi samt en utvecklad samskapandemodell. Projektet är finansierat av Österbottens förbund/ERUF och pågår till sista juli 2021.

    Projektledare är Linda Nyholm, vårdvetenskapliga enheten vid ÅA i Vasa.

    Epic

    Experience Lab jobbar med EPIC.

    Projektet vidareutvecklar den existerande applikationen Pocket Democracy och gör den tillgänglig för alla österbottniska kommuner. Projektet ser även närmare på vilken effekt applikationen har på invånarna. Intresseområdet som är speciellt intressant är hur involvera yngre i politiken.

    Tillgången till information om lokalpolitik kan vara svårt. Inom projektet har man konstaterat att det finns ett behov att göra kommunikationen mella kommunen och invånarna lättare och mera användarvänlig. Det är orsaken varför Pocket democracy skapades, men vilka effekter har applikationen?

    I Pocket Democracy-appen kan du exempelvis följa ärenden, följa intresseområden eller se de senaste besluten från kommun. Sökfunktionen gör det möjligt att söka efter information i offentliga kommunala dokument. I appen kan du också se en lista på politiker och vilka organ de sitter med i.

    Under hösten 2019 testades applikationen i Malax kommun, men vem som helst har möjlighet att ladda ner appen och testa på funktionerna.

    Pocket Democracy utvecklas av Åbo Akademi (Statskunskap med masskommunikation) i samarbete med Experience Lab, Gambit och Malax kommun.

    Disrupting the media scene

    Disrupting the media scene: This project examines adopting emerging technologies as a vehicle for transforming the audience relationship and models in journalistic media – and our role is to look at some of the suggested developments from the human point of view.

    The project is led by InnoLab at the University of Vaasa and funded by Helsingin Sanomain Säätiö.

    FFFF – Flexibla, flerspråkiga, fördjupande och fortbildande studier i en mångkulturell digital värld

    Flexible, multilingual, advanced and continuous education in a multicultural digital world: The aim of the project is to promote continuous learning in line with Åbo Akademi’s strategy, which emphasizes diversity, cross-border education, lifelong learning, and students’ opportunities.

    Through flexible content modules, the model will create a package that meets competency needs that have been identified by research-based knowledge.

    Our role is twofold; to give courses in the principles of user-centered design and evaluation of welfare tech, and to contribute to the further development of the model.

    Listiac

    Listiac – Linguistically Sensitive Teaching in All Classrooms

    Listiac strävar efter att nå ut till relevanta lärarutbildningar i olika kontexter med varierande språklig diversitet för att kunna utveckla evidensbaserade policyer. Projektets mål är att alla elever i Europa ska ha samma möjlighet att nå framgång i sina studier.

    Trots att det finns mycket tidigare forskning på området och en mängd olika verktyg för enskilda lärare, är det fortfarande svårt att förändra enspråkigt fokuserade policyer och praktiker i skolorna. Därför vill man särskilt nå ut till lärare som inte undervisar i språk, och fokus ligger på både lärarutbildning och lärarfortbildning.

    Under projektets gång utvecklar, testar och utvärderar forskare från olika europeiska universitet ett reflektionsverktyg som ska hjälpa blivande och nuvarande lärare och lärarutbildare att bli mer språkmedvetna i sin undervisning, sina tankar och attityder. Projektet samverkar med undervisningsministerierna i Finland, Portugal och Slovenien.

      Artisan

      Artisan – Artificiell intelligens i skolan

      Det övergripande syftet med projektet är att öka kunskapen om och förståelsen av hur artificiell intelligens (AI) kan användas inom matematikundervisning och lärande. Ett krav för att ett verktyg ska kunna kallas AI-baserat är att det är anpassningsbart eller adaptivt.

      Några exempel på AI-verktyg för skolbruk är adaptiva läromedel som erbjuder anpassat innehåll, dialogbaserade intelligenta tutorer som ger automatisk feedback i form av t.ex. stöttning och beröm, verktyg för automatisk bedömning samt sociala robotar som kan programmeras, förses med mjukvara, och fungera både som lärare och elev.

      Projektet kartlägger olika AI-baserade verktyg för lärande i matematik och studerar även hur lärare ser på värdet hos olika digitala resurser och hur de förhåller sig till möjligheterna och riskerna med verktyg som baserar sig på AI.

      Projektet bygger också vidare på den erfarenhet som Experience Lab har kring elev-robot interaktion och utvärderar hur en social robot kan ge mervärde i matematikklassrummet.

      Internet of Things (IoT) in Energy systems

      The focus of the Internet of Things (IoT) in Energy systems-project is to boost energy technology research through a new form of multidisciplinary cooperation. Through the project, R&D personnel and ICT- and energy technology experts meet and cooperate in a new way towards a smarter specialization.

      Project description:

      The aim of this project is to boost energy technology research through a new form of multidisciplinary cooperation where R&D personnel and ICT- and energy technology experts meet to cooperate in a new way towards a smarter specialization. The new kind of energy technology research and interdisciplinary R&D cooperation also aims at strengthening the regional innovation capacity. New equipment and demo environments are raised and built up where different levels of energy systems and their specific qualities can be studied, modelled, stimulated and tested through IoT based methods and tools. All to better understand and implicate the dynamics in the systems and to increase the development of new technology, applications and new services in cooperation with regional organizations and businesses.

      Project actions:

      • Elaborate a research- and demo environment for energy technology and system development where IoT- based methods and tools have a crucial role.
      • Strengthen regional knowledge within the field of energy research through a new form of multidisciplinary R&D to work towards a smarter specialization
      • Create a demo environment / Living Lab to conduct field studies and demonstrations of energy related products with IoT functions, energy transformation units and complete energy systems

      Open Social Innovation policies driven by co-creative Regional Innovation…

      The Osiris project is back with a new season of Open Social Innovation for regional development.

      In the first season OSIRIS demonstrated how actors with different experiences and expectations can solve real-life societal challenges through OSI methods – stimulating a bottom-up co-creation process for regional development.

      And here is a video to give you an overview of the results and long term impact of the first phase of the project.

      Towards the end of season one, the pandemic hit and limited the important face to face interactions. This disrupted the collaboration process, but on the other hand, boosted smart working, and many distance-based collaborative tools for co-creation etc.

      It did, however, leave us all with a feeling of uncertainty about the future and the role that OSI can play in regional development. But never questioning the need for engaging citizens – just finding new ways of doing it.

      Europe is currently facing the challenges of the ecological transition and digital transformation. This means re-designing the human interaction with the physical environment for a more resilient society and sustainable way of living. In this post pandemic recovery, getting everyone onboard in a green and digital transition is at the forefront.

      Building on prior results, the partners of Osiris will contribute to face these challenges by the following actions:

      1. conduct an evaluation of the OSI activities in the shadow of COVID-19, examining how OSI may be used towards an ecological and digital transition
      2. exchange experiences on the implementation of the recovery and resilience actions. A set of four interregional exchange events, including study visits will allow such a comprehensive review of experiences of handling the impact of the pandemic on OSI for regional innovation in diverse sectors: health, energy, culture, tourism and digital transformation of public administration.
      3. Through a series of webinars on the OSIRIS Youtube channel and interactions via social media, new learnings and good practices will be disseminated and communicated to a wide audience of policy makers, businesses, researchers and citizens.

      Based on these additional activities, the partners will produce:

      • Six new good practices boosting ecological and digital transition
        Improvements of policy instruments
      • Six streamed events/webinars focused on the learnings of the exchanges of experience and helping to understand the impact of Covid on regional development and face the ecological and digital transition.
